"Although the Greater Yellowlegs is common and widespread, its low densities and tendency to breed in inhospitable, mosquito-ridden muskegs make it one of the least-studied shorebirds on the continent.

* Medium-sized to large shorebird.
* Long, bright yellow legs.
* Rather long neck and bill.
* White rump and tail." -allaboutbirds.org

This Yellowlegs was in NW Oklahoma yesterday (Jan. 28th). It should be here only during migration, so we're not sure if it's heading north or south. We're having such mild temperatures for January...maybe it's just hanging out. ;)

This was a Christmas gift to my sister-in-law. It seemed to be well received. :) I etched the copper pendant & hung a tiny, vintage key from it along with a hand wired crystal briolette. I put the finished piece on a stainless steel chain. I'm still very much in favor of mixing metals.

If you care to, you can see a plethora of hand crafted Christmas gifts over at my blog. ;)

"The Barn Owl has excellent low-light vision, and can easily find prey at night by sight. But its ability to locate prey by sound alone is the best of any animal that has ever been tested. It can catch mice in complete darkness in the lab, or hidden by vegetation or snow out in the real world." -allaboutbirds.org

Thanks to the college student who told us about this Barn Owl! Much appreciated. :)

And besides that, I like seeing it when I return to my stream. :)

"A hawk of the North, the Rough-legged Hawk breeds in Arctic tundra and taiga regions around the northern hemisphere. Both dark and light forms are common, with many birds intermediate between the extremes." -allaboutbirds.org

But isn't it nice of them to come all the way down here to see us during the 'non-breeding' season? :)
