F5 vs F8

F5 vs F8

From the Lessons Learned Set

What went wrong: 1) After a planned excursion of taking a group portrait, setting up a tripod, and finding that perfect spot, it was disappointing to realize that F5 was not enough DoF to get both the front row and the back row in focus. I used the LCD to focus on the front row and it looked fine from the LCD. Once I put it on the computer, however, it was clear that the back row faces were not focused. Ugghh. 2) The other problem with this shot is the sun ray that got through directly on one of the faces.

What could have helped: 1) When shooting a portrait with 2 rolls of people, F8 would have been much better. In retrospect, I would have had someone from the back row stick their hand out between the 2 rows so that I can focus on that spot. 2) Using a black reflector or other substitute could have helped block out the light on the face.
