While looking for Mat web-weaver spiders I came upon this flower.

I took this photo in 1966 in Misawa, Japan. These incredible antennas could find the direction of any HF or VHF signal to a half a degree accuracy. When a signal intercept was coordinated with other listening sites across the globe, the location of then target signal could easily be determined. Most of these antennas have been dismantled, but I believe this one is still in use. See if you can find it on Google Earth

This beautiful beetle, typical of brightly colored almost anythings in nature, is poisonous or at least unpalatable. In New Guinea a similar beetle is eaten by a bird called the Pothui, whose flesh then becomes poisonous to anything foolish enough to want to eat it. Taken at Loomis Quarry, in Loomis, California.

The area where this was taken is about 20 feet from where I park my car. Usually Blue Dashers predominate but there are always surprises.
