The Dan peoples are said to have made their masks through the interpretation of dreams that were dictated by various spirits of the forest. They made masks to underscore their values which helped maintain social order. Among other things, the Dan people made masks to honor the king, encourage their warriors and athletes, for use in secret societies, and also to entertain.
