Dan Mask
The Dan peoples are said to have made their masks through the interpretation of dreams that were dictated by various spirits of the forest. They made masks to underscore their values which helped maintain social order. Among other things, the Dan people made masks to honor the king, encourage their warriors and athletes, for use in secret societies, and also to entertain.

Pende Mask (Congo)
The Pende who have lived in the Congo since the 17th century made a wide variety of masks for various purposes. This superb mask, covered with kaolin was used for initiation or circumcision.
