I have never seen this species before, but had to look it up out of curiosity. Might it be a Milbert's Tortoiseshell?

These ones are supposed to be fairly active. The flutterby looks great against those flowers.

I think sarai nailed it as well (well, not literally). April is about the time for the first ones to start flying around.

I don't remember them either, but they are supposed to be fairly common. I guess if I see orange and black I automatically think Monarch.
