Moon Rise Over Queen Anne

Moon Rise Over Queen Anne

The moon rising over Queen Anne hill, with silhouettes of two Canada Geese (Branta canadensis ). This was the scene I was shooting, waiting for a flock of birds to fly directly over the moon. I've seen the local geese do this occasionally as they're moving for the evening. It didn't happen on this night.

Single exposure, RAW, Manual, 1/640 (to capture bird motion), ISO800, f7.1. Shot just as the sun dropped below the horizon. Tweaked exposure, contrast and applied some NR in Lightroom.

Reflecting on a Wood Duck

Reflecting on a Wood Duck

Beautiful light and reflections yesterday on a calm Duck Bay. I was sitting watching Mallards at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle -- hanging out, just in case "someone" unusual came by. I saw what appeared to be a Mallard drake in my periphery. But it was, instead, a male Wood Duck (Aix sponsa). He made his handsome appearance in front of my lens, entering stage left. Usually when I see Wood Ducks, they're being furtive, foraging in the shadows of tree overhangs. This guy wasn't too disturbed by my camera and tripod.

Precursor to a Bath

Precursor to a Bath

An American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos ) wades through puddles on his way to the big bath in an adjacent pond -- Montlake Fill/Union Bay Natural Area (Seattle, WA). There were the usual hundreds of crows in this one spot, getting in their last afternoon bath before alighting at once and flying north. I have a weakness for the personalities and tenacity of urban birds and common birds, particularly when the light hits them just so.
