I met a colleague at Jessee's in Carrboro for lunch, and after we finished I noticed two people chatting at the next table who I thought might be willing to participate in the project. I took my time getting out lenses, filters, etc. while thinking about how to approach them, and when I finally did they asked what the pictures were for. I explained the project, getting background from both of them as we filled out releases. After several minutes of chatting and prep, we wandered to the picnic table just outside and started with Sarah, switched to Alex, and came back to Sarah again once I'd found my groove.

In this shot I had asked Sarah to think about a time when she was focused, and I took several shots as she looked down at her notebook. I then asked her to make eye contact and got this one.

Sarah is a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, and she's in town working, saving money, and writing poetry as she waits to hear back from graduate programs (in poetry and creative writing) to which she has applied. I wish her the best of luck with graduate school and beyond.

As with Sarah (Stranger #04), I met Alex at Jessee's in Carrboro. He and Sarah were sharing a table.

I hadn't planned on getting a laughing shot with Alex, but most of my well-framed and in-focus shots of him had him with eyes closed and laughing a big laugh. This was my favorite of those, and given the interaction possibly the fairest representation of him. He told me he won "best laugh" in high school, which was in NJ. Before his family moved to NJ, they lived in Singapore, where he was born. He told me he'd like to live there again someday. He'd also like to teach, which is why he's planning on applying to a Masters program in either teaching or education. As with Sarah, I wish him good luck with grad school and beyond.
