my favorite (i think) of three experimental broccoli shots, with a faded background, the reverse of the actual lighting of the broccoli.

The broccoli was lit from above at close range by a 15" softbox shooting straight down, about f/6.

The background, a white curtain room divider was lit by a gelled, gobo'd flash at about f2.8.

Taken with a nikon d200, iso 100, 1/250th, f/5.6, 70mm

Please try to look at all three and let me know which (if any) should go in my food and product portfolio.

This little broccoli has a black background.

This little broccoli has a green background.

Nice shots.
I like this one the best of the three. The one with the lighter background is nice as well though.

How did you give the broccoli the 'floating' effect?

I prefer this of the three. Is the gradient due to natural fall-off of the background light?

the broccoli was stuck on a giant pin, which was later photoshopped out.

the light falloff was done photographically in real life. i taped a black piece of cardboard to the top of the flash, so that it would project a blurred shadow line on the white curtain.

I like the light here, but I find the softness of the top bit of the broccoli a little distracting. I'd like to see the top profile of the tree be sharp for a little more pop from the background.

i originally shot it at f/2.8, for the typical shallow DOF of food photography, but didn't like the fuzziness when i started to incorporate the silhouette. i increased the f-stop to 5.6 to try and sharpen everything. I basically agree, maybe i should have closed it down a bit more.

I like this one best. The background adds to the picture without being too distracting.

beautifully done. cant decide between this and the black bg. i suppose it will all depend if you want to keep the suspended look or not. if not, the black is better? congrats again

Awesome shots; I prefer the black background, but this one might be more "useful" from a stock perspective possibly...
