U 995 in Laboe

U 995 in Laboe

This is the U 995, a German U Boat which was on active duty in WW 2. After the war, it was kept in service for another 20 years by the Norwegian navy - as a training ship. Germany bought it back for 1 Deutschmark, and today it serves as a tourist attraction.
In the large version of the picture, you can see an emblem on the turret - two figures from the children's game 'Coppit' ("Fang den Hut" in German ['cap the hat']).

The U 995's last German commander, Hans-Georg Hess, died recently (March 2008) in Hanover.

Naval Memorial, Laboe

Naval Memorial, Laboe

The Naval Memorial in Laboe has a somewhat more jingoistic name in German (Marine-Ehrenmal, Naval Memorial of Honour). Built in 1927 to honour the dead of the German navy. A rededication took place in 1954; it was from that time considered to honour sailors of all nations who died in the Second World War.
