Only 17 Yrs. Old, Private Edward Swift De Rosset, CSADe Rosset, CSA is buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington, NC. The De Rosset name is a pretty prestigous name in Wilmington. I'm not yet sure who he is related to here, but Colonel Gaston Meares, CSA married into the De Rosset family, he was killed in battle, then ironically Lt. Col De Rosset took command of the regiment after that. So i'm sure there is more to this soldier's life than just this beautiful monument. And it is very distinguishing looking for a private. I really hate they put just a private on his epitaph, that is sad.

Colonel Gaston Meares, CSACol. Meares, CSA was with the 3rd Reg., NC Inf. He was a native of New Hanover County, Wilmington, NC and a Mexican War veteran. He married into the notable De Rosset family of Wilmington. During the Battle of Malvern Hill, July 1, 1862, Meares moved forward to survey the Federal position with his field glasses. He was struck in the head and killed by an artillery shell fragment. He was killed in the yard of a parsonage at the base of Malvern Hill. www.civilwarbattlefields.us/blog/data/38/html there are many more bios on the web on this prestigous Civil War hero and also his family. Col Meares and his wife lost 3 children, ages 8, 4, & 2, they are all buried in a family plot in Oakland Cemetery, Wilmington, NC. Also included are pics. of his family's graves. Ironically after he was killed, Lt. Col. De Rosset took command of the Regiment.
