I took this evening, the windchill was unbelievable. This is the edge of the ice at the end of a pier in the Saint Mary's River, there is enough current at the end on the pier that the water doesn't freeze there in the winter.

What a difference.......kayaker and the American Mariner........we took a ride to the Soo yesterday and we got to see a few ships and a kayaker.
I went out tonight hoping to photograph the Canada Day fireworks, but I was disappointed that they were cancelled due to poor weather, So instead I took pictures from the boardwalk of the colours being produced in the smoke from the industry.

The sunset was photographed on December 11th, 2008. It was shot from the Canadian shore of the river looking at the American shore.
It was foggy this morning so I went down to the river to take shots of the sun breaking through the clouds.

I really like to take pictures of nature, but in the winter its harder because its cold and everything is covered in snow. So I look forward to the sunrise and sunset of every day because they are the only times I get to see some colour.

I shot this hand-held last year in the morning just after waking up. I have already posted a more natural version of this image here. I added some tone mapping effects in ACR to the image and used the spot adjustment tool to add a yellow colour to the clouds and a blue colour to the water, together I think they contrast very nicely.
When I opened the RAW file in CS4, I saved as a 16 bit TIFF file and continued to edit the image. I added light rays by rendering clouds, using threshold adjustments and then bluring the layer and changing the blending mode and opacity. I added the rain by creating a noise layer and using motion blur on it and setting the blend mode to screen. At the end of the editing I saved the 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.
EXPLORED! #43
A clear river flowing over rocks in the winter. This is a little sliver of the Saint Mary's River near the edge of the rapids. This stretch of rapids is prized for trophy rainbow trout fishing with rainbow trout being caught weighing more than 20 pounds. The creaking of the ice I was standing on made me nervous as I was taking these shots.

*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 2Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/22 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 18.0mm (28.8mm Equivalent)
I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup, a polarizing filter, and a 2Sec. selftimer. I processed the RAW data in Adobe Camera Raw and removed a few specks of dust and distracing rocks in Photoshop CS4 Extended. I also used the sponge tool to bring some vibrance to the rocks under the water in the foreground.
Can someone tell me what the next full stop down of aperture value is from ƒ/32?

This was the last shot I took today, the sun had just set and the colours were reflecting on the water.
I don't know much about the Saint Mary's River in Georgia, but I'm guessing you have to be careful where you park your boat.
The side of a powerhouse with rapids in the foreground during a sunset. Being around this spot makes me nervous, because I am not sure where the international border runs, I have heard stories of some fishermen who have been arrested for venturing too far across the river.

A shot of Jennie standing infront of a sunset over the Saint Mary's River. This is Jennie, I met her on Model Mayhem. Her Model Mayhem Number is: 1657168.
About the Photo
*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 1/200 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/5.0 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 43mm (68.8mm Equivalent in 35mm Film)
I shot this on a tripod using a 10 Sec. selftimer. To the left, infront of and slightly higher than the camera I had a Canon Speedlite 430EX II that was about 3 feet away from her at full power and at 28mm to provide key light. I used the selftimer to run from the camera and stand to the right of the camera infront of the model to use a reflector to bounce some of the light from the sun into her face to fill in the shadow areas. I underexposed from the ambient exposure so the background colours would be vibrant in the sky.
I opened the RAW file in ACR and increased the vibrance, clarity, and blacks sliders to make her stand out more. I manipulated the tone curve to give more contrast to the scene. I changed the hue of the yellows, saturated them and darkened them. I made the greens greener, saturated them, and slightly brightened them to make the grass and leaves around her stand out more. I used the adjustment brush to slightly saturate, darken, and add contrast to the background.
I opened the RAW file in CS4 and saved as a 16 bit TIFF file. I duplicated the layer and used the clone stamp and spot healing tools to get rid of annoying things. I saved a 16 bit TIFF file, converted to sRGB and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.

I am so mad about my NEW laptop! I have had it fixed 4 times in a row for the same problem that I have had since the first day! My advice is to never buy an ACER product, because if you get stuck with a lemon like I have they will not replace it, instead they will ship it away for a month and send it back to you without anything being repaired! Their service is horrible and there is no reasoning with them! I have called them repetitively demanding a replacement computer but they tell me that all they can do is send it back for a repair. ACER is incompetent in diagnosing and repairing their products!!!! What company would send you through this much trouble!!
I bought my ACER laptop from my local STAPLES store. The people here are just as incompetent as those working for ACER! The first time I brought in my computer, they tried to fix my computer by reinstaling the sound software, but it did not work. So a week later I went back and had them ship it to ACER for repairs. Two weeks later I stopped by STAPLES to see why my computer had been gone for so long. I went to customer service and asked about my computer and someone found it in a box in the storage room. I had a fealing it had never been sent. It had no paperwork from ACER, and when I called ACER later they said my computer had not been sent to them. HENCE STAPLES never sent my computer away but had it sitting in their storage for two weeks!!!
What is even more outrageous is that I sent my computer away again, this time it got to ACER, but it took 3 WEEKS to get it back. I actually got documentation from ACER on their repairs this time and all they did was reinstall the sound software. The problem with my speakers still persisted, so outraged I went to STAPLES to demand an answer to all the incompetence I had been experiencing. The manager took me into a room seperate from the main part of the store and tried to convince me that I had damaged my speakers on my laptop by turning the volume too high for too long and that ACER's warranty would not cover this. I protested and said that I never used my volume very loud and that you should be able to listen to your speakers at any volume. Even more outraged I left the store and went home and called ACER. I asked one of their customer service employees, "If I turn the volume too high on my laptop for too long could I possibly damage my speakers?" They sounded confused as if they had never been asked that question and replied "Of course not!" So I asked "If my speakers were damaged by being blown would the warranty not cover that?" The repressentative replied "Of course we would cover that" So I asked " If I send back my computer this time you will replace the speakers and the sound should be fine?" The representative replied that the technicians should be able to diagnose and fix the problem.
So I sent my computer away for the third time (second official time since STAPLES never sent it away to ACER the first time) convinced that they would fix the problem this time. I sent the computer to ACER myself instead of letting STAPLES do it for me. I included with my computer a letter of my own diagnosis and that I felt that the speakers should be replaced. This time I had to wait nearly a whole monthe before the computer came back. To my surprise the computer still had the same sound issue!!!! I immediately called ACER and asked them "WHY AM I STILL EXPERIENCING THE SAME SOUND ISSUES!!!!!" they replied that both times they had the computer they did not detect a problem. Outraged I demanded a replacement computer, the customer service representative asked a higher-level technician concerning my demand and replied "Your only option is to send the computer back to us for a re-repair!" I was even more outraged and nearly began shouting "I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO USE MY COMPUTER FOR OVER 2 MONTHS, I AM A UNIVERSITY STUDENT WITH A NEED FOR A COMPUTER TO DO MY ASSIGNMENTS, I CANNOT AFFORD TO KEEP SENDING THIS COMPUTER AWAY WHEN YOU ARE TOO INCOMPETENT TO FIX IT!!!!!!" The representative confirmed to me that this time my speakers had been replaced and that all the software had been checked. He tried to convince me that some of the songs I had been playing were corrupted, but I said to him that the sound problems I am experiencing occurs with any sound that the speakers produce and that the problem is not exclusive to any particular song. Confused and outraged I hung up the phone and now I have no idea what to do about my computer!
UPDATE I was really angry when I typed this, I am sorry that I placed so much enpthasis on not buying from my local Staples store or from Acer. What I experienced might just have been random occurance and it should not neccessarily stop anyone from purchasing an Acer product or buying from my local Staples store.

I saw this sunset on December 17th, 2008 outside the Station Mall on the Canadian side on the river the sun is right behind the International bridge that connects Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario with Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The river is flowing fast in this shot because they were letting a lot of water out of the power house on the Canadian side of the river. Just underneath the bridge where the sun is setting are the Saint Mary's Rapids. Which are said to be one of the worlds's best trophy rainbow trout areas. There are a few remaining natural islands in this part of the river, but most of them have been altered to allow the building of dams, power houses, locks, and industry. In the portion of the river seen in this shot there is a population of Atlantic Salmon, that have been introduced on the Michigan side. In the summer you can see some lucky fishermen catching 5-10 lbs Atlantic salmon and Rainbow trout along the boardwalk.
