The Reeves's Pheasant is a large (up to 210 cm long) pheasant within the genus Syrmaticus. It is endemic to China.
The name commemorates the British naturalist John Reeves, who first introduced live specimens to Europe in 1831.
The male is a brightly plumaged bird with a scaled golden white and red body plumage, grey legs, brown iris and red skin around eye. The head is white with a black narrow band across its eyes. The male has an extremely long silvery white tail barred with chestnut brown.
They have been introduced for sport and ornamental purposes to Hawaii, USA, Czech Republic, France and the UK. In the latter three countries they have built up small breeding populations, and are still released on a small scale for shooting, often alongside Common Pheasants.
Due to ongoing habitat loss, and overhunting for food and its tail plumes, the Reeves's Pheasant is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. There are thought to be only around 2000 birds remaining in the wild.
Reeves's Pheasants are known to be aggressive towards humans, animals and other pheasants. Their call note is unlike other gamebirds in that it is a musical warble, more passerine sounding than would be expected. Their diet is vegetable matter as well as seeds and cereals. They are fairly common in aviculture.

While you walk along the paths, lookouts, and suspension bridges of one of the largest aviaries in the world, you can encounter and learn from the more than 700 free-flying birds.
There are about 4.9 acres surrounded by a mesh especially designed for the needs of an aviary. It is light, flexible, and allows the entry of bees and insects to encourage pollination without unbalancing the environment. Supported by pillars almost 98.4 feet high, this aviary transports you to a small ecosystem that houses species such as the MANDARIN DUCK, the CAROLINA DUCK, the SILVER PHEASANT, and the REEVE’S PHEASANT that roam across the ponds that run through the aviary. In addition, during the tour, which ends in a suspension bridge 170.6 feet, you will have the opportunity to see other birds flying such as the RAINBOW LORIKEET, LONGTAILED PARAKEET, ECLECTUS PARROT, different types of TURACOS, and METALLIC STARLINGS, among others, all these species will surprise you with their colors and calls.

Pheasants are birds of several genera within the family Phasianidae in the order Galliformes. Although they can be found all over the world in introduced (and captive) populations, the pheasant genera native range is restricted to Eurasia. The classification "pheasant" is paraphyletic, as birds referred to as pheasants are included within both the subfamilies Phasianinae and Pavoninae, and in many cases are more closely related to smaller phasianids, grouse, and turkey (formerly classified in Perdicinae, Tetraoninae, and Meleagridinae) than to other pheasants.
Pheasants are characterised by strong sexual dimorphism, males being highly decorated with bright colours and adornments such as wattles. Males are usually larger than females and have longer tails. Males play no part in rearing the young.
A pheasant's call or cry can be recognised due to the fact it sounds like a rusty sink or valve being turned.
Pheasants eat mostly seeds, grains, roots, and berries, while in the summer they take advantage of insects, fresh green shoots, spiders, earthworms, and snails. However, as an introduced species, in the UK they are a threat to endangered native adders.
The best-known is the common pheasant, which is widespread throughout the world, in introduced feral populations and in farm operations. Various other pheasant species are popular in aviaries, such as the golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus).
Etymology
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word "pheasant" ultimately comes from Phasis, the ancient name of what is now called the Rioni River in Georgia. It passed from Greek to Latin to French (spelled with an initial "f") then to English, appearing for the first time in English around 1299.
