"Thousand Origami Cranes (千羽鶴, Senbazuru) is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. In Japan, it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true.

I feel so awful every time I read or hear about the tragedy in Japan - & I feel so HELPLESS. I decided to photograph origami cranes & put them in my shop (sets of 4 note cards & 8x10 photos) with any/all proceeds going to the Red Cross Relief Effort in Japan.

Praying Mantis!

[AUCTION HAD ENDED. Thank you very much sugarsweets13 and rogvon!

As you know, the earthquake & tsunami in northeastern Japan have been catastrophic. There's not much that I can do at the moment, but here is my contribution to this group:

www.flickr.com/groups/charityprintauctions

I'm auctioning a 20" x 16" print of this image. I will use the digital printing services at Meridianpro.com, using their Kodak Endura Metallic paper. If you know an online digital printing firm that you would prefer for one reason or another, please let me know and we can talk, especially if you are from outside the US, as it might help in minimizing the shipping cost. If you are the winning bidder, then you should follow the payment instructions given by Andy in the discussion thread here:

How This Works

Then post a screengrab of your Red Cross donation receipt into the comments on this picture, or email it to me.

WANT TO BID - BUT YOU DON'T HAVE A FLICKR ACCOUNT?

Please just email me with a bid and I will place the bid in the comments on your behalf: rawheadz@gmail.com

I will then print and post the image to you, all printing and postage costs will be covered by me so all the money donated will go straight to the red cross.

CURRENT BID $250US. Please post your highest bid in the comments below. The auction will end on Monday, March 21st, midnight EDT (4AM, Mar 22nd, GMT).

I chose this image because I think it's one of the best I've taken, and I think it conveys a sense of hope amidst uncertainty. However, if you see anything else in my photo stream that you like better, the winning bidder may choose whichever one s/he likes. Here are some of my most popular shots on Flickriver.

Unlike my usual uploads (capped at 1024px^2), I'm uploading this at 1600px so that you may have a good idea of the exact image you will be getting. Please hit "L" to see in the LIghtBox and/or see it in its original size.

In ancient times, a lively summer festival was held throughout the country in honor of Susanoo no mikoto, also known as Gozu Tennô, to pray for freedom from pestilence and disaster. The Tennô Matsuri or Tsushima matsuri held annually on June 14 and 15 at Tsushima Jinja in Aichi Prefecture is a famous example still celebrated every year.

[ quoted from Basic Term of Shinto ]

Tsushima Tenno Festival is one of the famous river festivals in Japan. The highlight of this festival is the evening festival called Yoi-matsuri, when five makiwara-bune are set afloat on the Tennoh river. The glittering reflected light of lanterns on the surface of water is so beautiful.

things happening right now here in japan keep me speechless.

things keep getting worse and worse and i feel useless.

maybe i shouldn't, but can't help myself being depressed.

i took this pic on the very moment the first earthquake hit the north and east japan on Mar 11.

i felt dizzy for the moment, and the next second i realized that it was earthquake.

and it was the biggest one i've ever experienced in my life.

i got scared. but since then things went and still are going much much worse than i/everyone else imagined.

fortunately my family and i are safe and where i live got almost no damage.

yet i don't see the end of this disaster. no one can see it. coz it keeps happening.

ps : thanks a lot for your kindness. especially who sent a warm message.

sorry for not replying one by one. but i hope you'd understand.

i only use my Mac once a day to save electric power since that day.

anyway, i hope you're all fine.

thanks much for your support, and love.

They run from the northwest of Kiyomizu temple to the halfway point of Kiyomizu-zaka approach.

The total length of them is about 400 meters.

They are gentle and narrow sloping roads with flagstones and stone steps.

Along the streets, ther are many souvenir shops, the shops of kiyomizu-ware (a pottery created around Kiyomizu temple), tea houses and Japanese restaurants.

The streets has a Kyoto's unique atmosphere, so there is an endless stream of visitors.

"Ninen-zaka" means "slope of two years", and "San'nen-zaka" means "slope of three years".

It is said that you will die within two years when you fall down on Ninen-zaka and you will die within three years when you fall down on San'nen-zaka.

Please be careful not to fall down here.

Additionary, the different kanji characters of San'nen-zaka (the parenthetic characters above) have a meaning as "slope to pray for a safe delivery".

Message from Japan

It's passed a week since the earthquake. People prayed silently together at 14:46 the time it happened.

Now reported deaths are 7,000, missing 19,000, refuges 400,000. They're suffering from hunger, cold and stark reality.

There is a lack of water, food, medical supplies, doctors, volunteers, gasoline, and kerosene. They can't get them because the transportation network was almost completely destroyed by the TUNAMI. It swallowed up in a moment……..People, housing, fishing boats, roads, bridges, railway tracks, harbors and airports, everything!!

We had experienced some big disasters in this country so far and overcame many difficultly. This time the damage is too big and wide ranging, we've never experienced this much devastation. So we've been struggling, but working as much as we can.

And what is worse, the nuclear power generation problem happened because of the big TUNAMI. Now the government is doing its best, but everything doesn't go well easily. We have to watch how it is going. We really are sorry about the danger to all the people in the world. I hope everything will get better as soon as possible.
