Interiors + Exteriors

In full bloom, a year after its opening. For the background of this series you find comments here. - I have two pictures of the same subject, I decided to upload this almost humanless version first, the second is here.

It is interesting that these enormous columns holding reflectors on public places were usual equipments over East-Europe. The Hungarian equivalents had been erected the same way: on the centre of the car parking section of once Engels (now Erzsébet again) Square, Budapest.

Hier ist der Palast der Republik in seiner ganzen "Schönheit" zu sehen. Interessant auch die 4 Autos im Vordergrund.

This is the palace of the republic in former East-Berlin. It’s demolished completely, due to asbestos, which was used in the building very much.

At that socialist time indivdual traffic was very few.

The Palast der Republik was a building in Berlin, on the bank of the River Spree. It served primarily as the seat of the East German parliament, the Volkskammer, but it also housed two large auditoriums, art galleries, restaurants and a bowling alley.

Once opened, the building was sometimes nicknamed "Ballast der Republik" ("Ballast of the Republic") or "Erichs Lampenladen" ("Erich's Lamp Shop"), referring to the then incumbent Erich Honecker and the 1001 lamps hanging in the foyer.

Despite strong resentment felt by many Germans, in November 2003, the German parliament decided to demolish the building and leave the area as parkland until funding for the reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace could be found.

Berlin, Palast der Republik

The Palast der Republik (Palace of the Republic) that was built in 1976 on the site of the former Stadtschloss, has been dissasabled for several years now. Appearently the tons and tons of iron in the structure are also worth tons, and will be reused (through the fundings generated from it) when Stadtschloss will be rebuilt.

This photo is part of a project named Twentyone24.

A friend and I walked through Berlin taking photos for 24 hours on the longest day of the year, June 21st, 2008 - from midnight to midnight.

It was a day full of small talks with strangers, funny situations and a lot of very small photo adventures.

See www.twentyone24.de (in German) for details and more photos.

East Berlin, the Dome and the "palace of the republic" which is demolished due asbestos. Picture was taken in 1980. It took 9 more years till the socialist regime was pushed away by the people.

snapshot taken on the deconstruction site of Palast Der Republik, Berlin. a very aesthetic site, even by now...

The photo was shot at half past three in the morning and calculated out of five single shots using Photomatix Pro 3.

During the day tourist boats cross the river every few minutes and there's no way to have a calm water surface. I you look closely you can even see the red light of the Altes Museum.

The Volkskammer is a lovely restaurant, decorated and furnished with DDR artefacts, down to the cutlery and crockery. It offers a very good buffet breakfast to all comers at a great value price of 7 Euros (as of June 2014).
