After the caucuses last night, I posted my pics to Flickr, and I was contacted by someone from Yahoo News. I gave a phone interview about my experiences, and they used my sound bites in combination with a few of my photos for an AV story.
The first photo is mine, along with most (but not all, such as that out-of-focus one) in the first half of the story. Then it goes on to some Republican stuff.
You can get to the story by going to http://news.yahoo.com and clicking the link I circled above; you can also use this direct link.
How the Iowa Caucuses work for Democrats; the Republicans do it a different way that I can't comment on:
1. Registered members of the party go to a specified location at the same time (in this case, 6:30 p.m. on Thursday)
2. You sign in to prove you're registered to vote in that precinct.
3. You go find the group representing your favorite candidate and hang out there.
4. You wait for a long time for everybody to get in--this was especially long last night as there was a huge turnout.
5. You hear local party leaders do some party business (boring).
6. You vote by a show of hands for your favorite candidate. Only candidates who get greater than 15% are viable.
7. The votes are totaled, and if your candidate got less than 15%, you have the opportunity to join another group.
8. You vote again, and the final votes are tallied. The numbers are translated into a number of delegates, who then go on to contribute to the county/state totals.
Why is it important? All states do this (or else hold primaries, which are more like traditional voting), but Iowa is the first in the nation to hold their caucuses. That means it sets the tone for the entire nation--the person who wins from each party in Iowa gets a big boost and an improved chance of winning his/her party's nomination.

Iowa is pretty much the center of the political universe these days, as Republicans compete in the presidential caucuses. A lot of attention was focused on Iowa this past weekend for a big Republican straw poll in Ames. One activity at the Iowa State Fair to get people in the swing of politics is the Corn Poll, sponsored by a local television station - drop a kernel of corn in a jar for your favorite candidate. This isn't my greatest photo, but I did it primarily to try and copy the photo that was on the front page of Saturday's New York Times (see first comment).

People really were polite. I was offered chairs, someone brought me water--it was the best I've been treated this whole pregnancy. Democrats, I love you guys.

It’s common for Texans display the “Hook ‘em Horns” hand gesture, a reference to the University of Texas’ mascot. It’s hard to tell if Cruz is doing a variation of this, or is gesturing points with his fingers while taking to Governor Jindal. 4/9/2015 Photo by John Pemble
