The Saronic Gulf (Greek: Σαρωνικός κόλπος, Saronikós kólpos) or Gulf of Aegina in Greece forms part of the Aegean Sea and defines the eastern side of the isthmus of Corinth. It is the eastern terminus of the Corinth Canal, which cuts across the isthmus. Islands that are lined in the middle of the Gulf are Aegina, Salamis, and Poros along with smaller islands of Patroklou and Vleves. The port of Piraeus, also Athens' port is lying on the northeastern edge of the gulf. Ellinikon International Airport, used to stood is also in the northeast. Beaches are lined up to much of its coast from Poros to Epidaurus, Galataki to Kineta and from Megara to Eleusis and from Piraeus down to Anavyssos. Athens' urban area surrounds the northern and the eastern coasts of this gulf.

I had seen photos of these, so when we decided to go to Greece, I made sure we added it to the itinerary. I was so glad we did. What awesome sights they were. I posted my favorite shot of one of these monsters/nunneries back in September, but loved this one too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteora

There's a May 1st. tradition all over Greece: flowers are gathered and a wreath made of them is hung on the eve of May 1st. from balconies and windows or over house thresholds.

At night, young men sometimes steal the wreaths and take them to their loved ones! The wreaths not stolen remain hung until the feast of St. John, the Fire lighter, in June, when fires are lit and young men and women jump over them. May 1st. wreaths are then thrown into the fires...

Let me dedicate this wreath of purple flowers, as a symbol of Spring eternal and also young love eternal, to "zoom in tight"'s

Symi's recorded history goes back as far as the Trojan Wars (1120 BC) and its past is chequered with a series of invaders, beginning with Dorians, Pelponnese (6th-7th century), Romans, Turks (1522-1912) and Italians (from 1912 until World War 2).
