Big Pipe in Backyard (1)

This spread demonstrated how to build a fallout shelter in using a huge steel pipe in the backyard.

this is definitely my favourite - I'm not too worried about fallout myself, but it would be nice to have one of these in my garden (the shelter, not the well-dressed squatters).

We had one of these in our back yard when I was in 8th grade. Exactly like the diagram, except the door was oval. The crank on the wall (on the lovely lady's right) pulled in fresh air from the tin can/metal tube snorkel thingy--cos everyone knows radioactive air HATES tin cans. Best playhouse EVAH!

I wonder, were exceptions to building codes created for fallout shelters? And if so, are they still on the books? Might be a great way to make an end-run around annoying homeowner's associations :-)
