Now a photographer or artist isolates a subject and at least some elements from it to begin with in two immediate ways -- by selecting his subject to begin with; that is by leaving out or cropping out things surrounding the subject that are irrelevant or unattractive, and thus saying essentially "This is what I want you to look at", and by "reducing" a whole experience or whole perception of something to just its visual aspects.
