Hemis Gompa or Hemis Monastery ,which is abt 40kms is the richest among all the monastries that one gets to see in Ladakh.

The annual Hemis festival honoring Padmasambhava is held in early June every year which is a must watch for its splendid masked dances ,its a colorful fair displaying some beautiful handicrafts.

Thiksey Gompa !!!

Thiksey Gompa of Ladakh is situated at a distance of approximately 18 km from the town of Leh.

Thiksey gompa was built some 600 years ago and consists of 12 levels ascending a hillside, culminating in an incarnate Lama's private apartments at the summit. The gompa contains 10 temples; below the monastery itself are chapels and "houses" stretching down the hillside. Some 100 monks of the yellow-hat sect of Buddhism live here.

The statue was made entirely by local craftsmen and represents Maitreya, ("compassion" in Sanskrit) the Buddha of the Future. The prophecy made of the Future Buddha is that the world will be undergoing such chaos that the Future Buddha will teach compassion to the people.

One was lucky to be at religious ceremony that took place around 12 p.m. at Thikse gompa which was followed by quite a session of drums beating to the tune of long horns.

Little lamas were the busiest of all serving tea to the older Lamas who were reciting hymns
