The Great Pyramid: Size Matters

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now Cairo, Egypt.

The only remaining member of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is believed to have been built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu and constructed over a 20 year period concluding around 2560 BC.

The tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years, it is sometimes called Khufu's Pyramid or the Pyramid of Khufu

Fabulous shot -good job you've got the people there otherwise we'd have no idea of the scale -it's absolutely massive! Fascinating structure, taken from a great angle.

The true size is only visible if you look at the people sitting at the bottom of the pyramid.

Yeah! My professor at the University of Washington, Wenke, was the head of the crew who helped date these pyramids. They were given permission to climb up them and date organic matter found in the mortar between the bricks.

They were surprised to find out that these pyramids were about 1,000 years older than they had previously thought.

I love the grayish tone the sky has in this photo. Mine is all washed out from it being a scan:
    Khufu

Travis, your professor was such a lucky fellow! Security only let us climb the first two steps, after that, they primed their guns!
