naked oyster & chemicals

In order to view this Flickr video, you'll need to
install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player.
As an experiment I melted the Oystercard in acetone and explored different antenna layouts. (very small, as a stick, foldable, etc.)

what about the test you did with just the sound of the beep getting on the bus. Nice documentation, future of money man.

Is that screaching bleeping noise in the background supposed to be there or is Flickr's flash player screwed up? It's giving me a headache ...

The RFID chip will only be energized when the copper loop makes a single-direction circuit. The last one was just a jumbled mess which is why it didn't work.

Absolutely excellent stuff. I've been thinking of this for a long time and couldn't get the chip out without cutting - such a simple method. Nice one.

So in theory if you were so inclined, you could incorporate this into some kind of jewelry, ring bracelet etc and eradicate the need to carry the card altogether.

If so I like it, its maybe a step Oyster should take, I'm sure it would help it publicity wise, and increase the number of people using it!

How long did the card take to dissolve? I've decided to give it a try and put the resulting coil ring into my cell phone battery compartment, just so I have one less card to carry in my wallet. I've had the card sitting in 100% acetic acid solution for an hour, with no noticeable change in the card. Thanks for the great idea!

Nice idea!

@sayzey: As long as the jewelry is not made of a conductive material. Maybe it would look nice if it were enclosed in transparent resin.

thanks for all the comments - it is awesome you try this yourself and start off customizing.

Most interesting finding is actually that I realized that the bus-driver does not care if i pay with a card or a wire, the actual transaction is just reduced to this beep - as long as it beeps it is okay.

It is possible to ride on the London busses recording the oyster-beep on a recordable greeting-card and play it when you touch-in on the bus.

@will:
the bus experiment is in there, maybe I should have shown a longer take of it to see it is actually on the bus.

@dannunes: the card melts well in acetone - takes only 10-15 minutes

is there some danger with this of people copying the card from your closed wallet?

hows about bouncing the signal off your wallet and back to the machine?

Bitcloud2, that risk is always there.

Please let me know how far you can push the limits, it would be great so see something like a Oystercard Jacket with a huge aerial jojo!? I am curious who pushes this further and what kind of magic you guys come up with.

There is an article on sciencepunk doing some more explorations:
