A deserted building in Istanbul's Balat quarter, the old Jewish quarter of the city. This building has a great view to the Golden Horn, but a heavily trafficked road now passes right outside its windows.

Balat is located in the Fatih district of Istanbul, on the European side of Istanbul, in the old city on the historic peninsula, on the western bank of the Golden Horn. Today, Fatih is home to the most radical Muslim community in Istanbul. The closer you get to the Fatih Mosque on the top of the hill, the more covered the women are. But even though I didn't wear any kind of head scarf, people were welcoming and friendly. I definitely recommend a visit to this historically and culturally interesting part of Istanbul.
