Pocket Knife

Pocket Knife by surfinsandy23.
Done for Macro Monday group, this week's challenge was "Found in My Pocket"
Since I rarely put things in my pocket (because if I do they tend to get washed with the laundry...including lens caps!) I raided my purse pocket.
This is my pocket knife...an Opinel. Bought it while at scout camp in Quebec back in 2004. A very sharp knife, with an interesting history.
I wood burned my initials on it, since so many scouts have one too. The scout master liked it so much he had me do his too.

I always had a swiss army knife on my keychain. I ended up having to surrender them so often at airport security (always forgot before I got to the airport) that I stopped carrying one around.....it really made me realize how handy a good pocketknife is every time I need one and don't now have one.

Beautiful photo and good story. Your woodburned lettering is fabulous!

I have a great affinity for knives, especially folders. I usually carry one. (My favorite carry-knife is a Bob Terzuola folder) I used to go to custom knife shows and I had a modest collection. Had to sell off about two-thirds of it in the past decade, but still got some favorites and some beauties. Have to get them out and photograph them sometime.

Great MM!

I've never had an Opinel, but have admired their classic elegance. Seems like the perfect knife to slice an apple for lunch on the trail.

What a COOL shot! The lettering is excellent! They say when you carry a good pocket knife, you'll find reasons to use it. Works for me. :)

Great choice to do this in greyscale, really works well with this subject. I have had the same problem keeping up with a pocket knife on boy scout and girl scout outings. Great idea to burn your initials into the handle. Also, good lighting on this piece.

enjoying all the comments....wow! Who knew a knife could be such a converstaion piece.
Hanging out with scouts has given me a taste for collecting knives!
I get them in odd ways though. One of my favorites is a Case Boot knife with sheath! It was in the pocket of a hiking pack I bought at the Goodwill several years ago for $2! I did research and found out it's circa 1988~ish.
Hubby is currently making me a knife for my birthday from a kit. The kit came with bone to make the handles but we got Osage Orange to make the handles from. It's his first time making a knife, and it's turning out quite nice.
Photos will come when it is finished!
@ Hendongirl- no I'm not from UK. Live in Kentucky... but am a big fan of the UK Wildcats! lol!

Knives can be such personal tools, functional friends. I look forward to seeing the photos of the knife your husband is making for you. I'd love to see a shot of the pack and knife from the Goodwill pack.

When each of my two kids were born I bought a knife made in the year of their birth and wrote them a note about my affinity for knives. They are nice "everyday" knives, not fancy nor expensive.

I have a couple "found knife" stories, too.

When I was a kid visiting relatives in Wisconsin I was hiking in a wooded area and found a homemade knife. The blade was very rusty low-quality steel and it was in a homemade deerskin (with fur) sheath. I still have it.

About 12 years ago I was at my house working indoors, looking out the window when I saw group of four boys about 10 years old ride up on bikes, and hide something under the sidewalk where my tree's root had raised it up some. After they left I checked and found it was a classic Camillus USMC style fixed 6" blade knife in sheath. It was well-used. Maybe it belonged to one of the boy's fathers.

I debated what to do. Leave it there? Was it for after-school show-n-tell for some kid's boy buddies? Or was there a plan afoot to threaten or cut someone? I retrieved it, hoping to be able to find a way to return it to the adult owner. I saw the boys go to the hiding spot after school, along with some additional boys. They checked where they'd left it a couple of times, had brief conversations, then rode off before I could approach them. I never found out who owned the knife, but still carry it in my tool bag.

Several years ago I took my daughter with me to a knife show. At one of the tables, she picked up a small knife and cut herself accidentally, despite the "these are sharp" warning signs and strategically placed dishes with band-aids. After she applied a band-aid to the minor wound, the guy at the table GAVE her the knife. That was nice. I've still got it stashed away in her collection.

BTW, I've still got -- and use -- the axe I got when I was a Boy Scout some 45 years ago. (It's got an official BSA logo on it...I should shoot it)

I've got a photo of my Cub Scout RING in my photostream..now that's an oldie!
