This beautiful color lithograph printed and embossed postcard was made in Germany. It is unused. The 46-star U.S. flag carried by the cavalryman was in use from 1908-1912.
Off the top of my head, I can tell you that the corporal is riding a M1904 McClellan saddle of russet leather and that the bridle rosette is Indian Wars M1874. If the artist meant the bit to be a Shoemaker, it is incorrectly drawn. There should be a connecting bar between the two shanks. I *think* the jacket is about 1906. (Gotta dig out my Randy Steffen Horse Soldier books!) The sword is anybody's guess, especially since this picture is an artist's conception, and a foreign artist at that. Doesn't look anything like the U.S. army swords of the period to me.
