Why the tape? Three words: "New, York, City."

Give us more details! What's the frame? What's the crank? Why not clipless pedals? What's the brakelevers?

Gen, dang, can't you read tags, bwoy? OK OK, it's a stock Cannondale Capo 2007 frame (came with RPM cranks) that I've customized with Profile AirWIng bars and QS2 levers and old-skool MKS pedals and clips. (Clips 'cause I want the biomechanical advantage, and not-clipless 'cause I ride in traffic 99% of the time and need to be able to put my foot on the ground without a thought.)

Alex, lol. It's got a flip-flop hub. One of these days I may well flip it.

no really, I'm clueless. what does NYC have to do with tape on the whatever part that's called? :)

also your clips/non-clipless explanation doesn't make sense to me... you have clips because of the transference efficiency, but you need to put your foot down without a thought (and I imagine clips require thought...)???

please, someone, enlighten me! i am teh noob. :\

bisceglie, great advice. I've had no fewer than five bikes stolen in my lifetime (three of them properly secured with Kryptonites, two my own idiot fault) and knock on wood, I'll be dipped in shit if this is number six.

bopuc, the tape serves multiple purposes. Primarily, it protects the frame from the serious banging-around involved in throwing it against the various objects to which it needs to be secured. Secondarily, and it's admittedly not going to be particularly effective in this role, it covers up the branding and makes it just that tiny little bit less attractive for the length of a prospective thief's once-over.

The pedal clips is just a matter of personal preference. I never have gotten fully used to clipless, and as a consequence I'm not safe with them in traffic. I'm sure people fully at ease with Looks or SPDs or whatever can get in and out of them just as fast as I can get out of my clips, but I'm not among their number. : . )

*that's* what a 'dale bad boy *should* be like... although, the profile bars would be a stretch for me these days. Nice city wheels too - those rims look bombproof.

I have a 2001 BB that looks very similar but minus the personal input this has... I use spuds though - albeit fairly loose, but they definitely help in getting off the lights quickly. I never could do clips...

Pete, they are! As for the fairly aggressively forward posture, yeah, I find it's no longer as comfortable as it used to be. There seems to be some kind of gut in the way.

I've always hated drop bars, too. Maybe the next step is some kind of cruiser bars, for the total Amsterdam effect. : . )

Joe, OMG, you own an *Alta*? I bow down!

Adam, welcome to bike dork land - sexy ride!

Re: clips/clipless .. It's funny you say you want to be able to put your foot down without thought -- I find straps to be much harder to do that with than clipless!

And yea, seriously, take those reflectors off man. ;-)

Show us your lock!

Reflectors stay on, no matter how d0rky. I ride enough at night, in my various all-black ensembles, that they actually do me some good.

いやいやいや、take off the reflectors and get some good blikenlights -- much more effective (safety-wise) than reflectors and more stylish.

A good light on the front and back blinking away will alert drivers of your presence far more than spoke reflectors. Me thinks.

Yeah, I got one of the Alta bikes. It was a pain in the ass to get it. Had to pick it up at the airport customs office and pay duty on it. I'll post picks of it soon.
