I Heart San Francisco

I Heart San Francisco by Stuck in Customs.
Oh, also, I heart myBlogLog, where I just joined... click here to join my community

I had to spend about $300 in order to pay all the homeless people to get out of the way of this shot, but I think it was well worth it.

I like how cities are doing this artistic stuff and contracting with local artists. I'm not a fan of tax-supported public art, however. I heard that in Iceland that if you are a recognized, but unemployed artist, that the government will actually give you a regular stipend. Anyway, I digress.

Each corner of Union Square here in San Francisco had some uniquely painted heart. I thought this one was the coolest with the sky that day, so I had to grab a shot.

Ohhh my... what an amazing shot...... love it!!!

But yeah.. it is true.. they actually do pay artists stipend, just because they are famous, f.e. if you are a champion in playing chess you can get it or if you are a recognized painter. Personally I don't like it, since they are just as unemployed as the next guy!

Well done! I was there for a conference last fall, and I was so bent on getting back and forth from the Moscone Center to my hotel that I didn't even realize there were different hearts on different corners of this square. I took a picture of the one that I cam across everyday and missed the rest. Love all the elements you have here, sky, trees and the angle.

Great shot !
If you are an artist in Nederlands you can apply for a small help from an organization that will give you some money in order to help you to produce your art and sell it. No matter if you are famous or not, but the famous ones don't need it...
I personally think that is a very good idea because an artist is suppose to create, to have time and be in the right enviroment for it.
The public disply of art is wonderful and certainly helps lots of artists with new projects and money. Every city should have a lot of public art !!

Thanks all.

Yes, this is a real heart.

My judgment is that the government should not buy art. I don't want someone that doesn't know anything about art redistributing my hard-earned tax money to redistribute it to cronies and sycophants.

Awesome shot. You're right, the clouds in the sky work well with the art. I don't know if you have been in Baltimore, Maryland lately. Baltimore is doing a similar thing with "crab statuary". There are big statues of crabs all over the city which are painted in various ways. Back in the 70's they did a similar thing with several fire hydrants all over the city.

Oh, cool! I love that sort of public art. Here is Los Angeles a few years ago, it was angels, and on Catalina, it was buffalo. Chicago had cows, Minniapolis/St. Paul, I believe, had Charlie Brown characters. I love them, I just think they're a neat little way to highlight some of the things areas are know for/associated with.

If I make it to the Bay Area anytime soon, I'll definately be on the lookout for these. Thanks for sharing.

Trey, don't get me wrong I like your pictures and look at them every day. But when you say the following, I react. 1) You like this piece of art. 2) SF paid them from tax-payers money. 3) You don't like public spending on art. 4) Public employees spending money on art doesn't know anything about art. Not well thought through or just the usual display of US double standards? Would you prefer a heart with a SNICKERS or Clear Channel logo instead perhaps?

Hey, my name is Dani and I’m from the San Francisco Public Television and Radio station, KQED. I think your perspective makes this photo exceptionally dynamic. We have a Flickr pool on our KQED homepage, and this is a great example of what we are trying to portray in our pool of Bay Area photos. I encourage you to submit it to our KQED Photo Gallery Pool, and then you'd have the opportunity to see it on our homepage.
