Kyiv at Sunset

    Thank you to my fans! Here are your favorite pics: the most Popular Pictures you dig from my stream. Thanks for the comments!

    This looks nice: Large on Black

    On my last day in Kiev (Kyiv is the Russian/Ukrainian name of the city) I climbed a extremely sketchy series of icy metal stairs up this hillside to the get this picture. Below is a famous street that I can't remember the name of, and even if I did, you have to be a dolphin to pronounce it.

    On that dolphinesque street, there are all kinds of local goods being sold from little carts and booths. Various nest Russian dolls, old Soviet war medals, pictures of the wars, wooden maces, particolored scarves, and cold-weather gear of every size and shape.

    In the distance, you can see Saint Michael's cathedral on the horizon.

      Well, I loved the shot - thanks for sharing it. One of the things I really like about visiting you in Flickr is that I get to see places that I will likely never see.

      When I read, "I can't remember the name of, and even if I did, you have to be a dolphin to pronounce it." I laughed out loud. Thanks for that - a good laugh first thing on Monday morning before work is a wonderful thing.

      I am still laughing at the dolphin thing...that's FUNNY!!
      The picture is great, I love the muted tones...it makes it more somber.

      Thank you for great pictures of this wonderful city!
      But let me add something to your story:
      - The name of this street is "Andreevsky spusk" (if pronounced in Russian), in English it will be "St. Andrew's Decent";
      - The church you see at the distance (on the horizon) is St. Andrew's Cathedral (it gives the name to the street). The legend has it that it was the spot where St. Andrew erected a cross and prophesied the foundation of a great Christian city in what was then a sparsely inhabited area;
      - The street itself is famous not only for this church, but a famous Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov (known for his "The Master and Margarita") used to live there.

      I totally agree with those comments near the top regarding the subtle/realistic tone mapping. I really think that with HDR, a little goes a long way ... and I am guilty of going too far myself, so I'm not throwing stones :)

      Don't get me wrong, I love your work ... just sometimes I think more realism is better than more dramatic effect/post-porcessing.

      Good shot, Excellent HDR.

      As for comments — please consider that Ukraine is not Russia, so:
      1. The city international (and a local, ukrainian, too) name is Kyiv, Kiev is obsolete Russian and USSR pronounce;
      2. This street is called Andrijiws'kyi Uzwiz (eng. Andrew's Descent str.) (not Adreewsky Spusk, that's a Russian name);
      3. The cathedral is called Andrijiws'ka Tzerkwa (eng: St. Andrew's Church)
