This is an unexpected visitor

This is an unexpected visitor by Stuck in Customs.
There I was, minding my own business in the part of the temple where I probably was not supposed to be. But sometimes when you are just wandering around, you can meet interesting people. It reminds me of the Douglas Adams book about Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. If you are lost, follow someone that looks like they know where they are going, and you will end up somewhere you probably needed to be anyway.

So here I was in the back halls of the temple and this guy popped onto the scene. He seemed friendly enough. There was not a lot of spoken words, but there was a lot of international wild gesticulation which appeared to indicate that he worked part time at the temple to help clean up. Since we were in a remote part of Malaysia, I don't think he got to see many white people with devil-blue eyes, and he seemed to enjoy twisting his head this way and that while grunting at me.

After just a short while, we ran out of things to wildly flail our arms about about, and I asked him if I could take a photo. He happily agreed, and started twisting his head again, looking into the camera.

It was a nice experience all around, and a gentle reminder that the most interesting things seem to happen when you are somewhere that you are not supposed to be, talking to someone you probably have no business talking to in the first place.

Fantastic story behind this take ... a great read. A fitting portrait. Great facial details. The hair really stands out well in these smaller sizes, but looks over-processed in the original just a tad ... probably a Gaussian blur around the edges with a change in blending mode would clean it up a bit, but keep within the same level of detail.

Impressive! It's the temple janitor. I don't say that in derogatory way -- no man is an island and a pleasant illusion is better than an horrific reality. Ok, enough with the subject, this is outstanding photography and post! To me this is truly a great photo. There are a number of things I see here that others may not. I'm not tooting my own horn but looking at artwork. Photos have subjects and grounds. They have a Gestalt and it's complex but it's simple in many ways. People just see and recognize but is based upon a mountain of culture and civilization that brought them to their evaluations. That includes me. Ok, simply put, wonderful composition. The lighting and post processing is excellent. I have not scrutinized it at it's highest resolution but I'm sure it can be cleaned up . Most of all, that guy has a great look! Now back to the present.

Trey, Thank you for sharing this expressive portrait. It makes me realize how much I live in a cocoon type world, while others enjoy a completely different reality each day. And they aren't troubled by trying to remember if they paid the cable bill already this month. Great "wake up" image!
