The Rorschach Light

The Rorschach Light by Stuck in Customs.
These light sculptures are incredible to capture. I normally don't like taking photos of "art", and I rarely carry my camera around museums any more... I just feel strange taking a photo of something that is already a piece of art. I was explaining this to my mom a few weeks ago, and then she mentioned these shots from Palm Beach, which was a good example of where I go against my own rules. I think the asterisk here is that some pieces of art can be (and should be) captured to help the viewer evoke the same response that I did while I was there. I suppose you can say anything is art... lights, sculpture, architecture, and the like... And I shoot all of those things. Okay this is going too deep down a thread now, so I'll just close it off by saying I don't like taking photos of paintings on walls, but this kinda stuff seems fun and cool to me.

This first photo is a new one of this crazy-bizarre wall light. I don't know what your Rorschach reaction to it might be... The other two photos are from the same restaurant there in The Breakers in Palm Beach. I didn't eat in this restaurant... the first night I tried this other Italian restaurant that is part of the hotel called Mangia that had these bright yellow heirloom tomatoes with their caprese salad... they were the best tomatoes I had ever eaten... I had to go back the next night again since I couldn't stand not tasting them again!

Ah yes, those lamps. I see them all the time. They never look that great though! I was thinking about that art thing the other day actually...funny....

I guess if you think about it, we all take alot of images of artwork....some in the form of architecture, bridges, food, ....... all pieces of art if you think about it.

Very cool work as always :) and I like that Italian restaurant too. Next time your there, try their off property Asian restaurant called "Echo" (great sushi!)

Wow, your treatment does these sculptures justice. Your mention of The Breakers evokes a lot of memories from me. I worked there many years ago, as a steward; it was one of my first jobs. There's a lot of money in that town; I remember that much.

Perhaps it's just me, but MY first impression was that it looked like a photo of Illinois Governor impeachee Blagojevich, saturated with radioactive chemicals, and shot from above and slightly to the front/left.

But it's a Rorschach test... so I guess anything's possible!

wow! very beautiful art work and really well taken -- feels like being there. Thanks for that! and, regarding taking photos of something "already unique", isn't the whole World a unique creation of God? Think water falls, lakes, sunsets and clouds.. it's just the same -difference is one is copyright protected, and signed while the other is just free to use, and capture.

These are spectacular! Beautiful shots. The lighting and treatment is wonderful.... I hear what you are saying there. One reason I don't care for photographing a painting is because the painting is a composition like a photo is, it seems redundant, and not using photography creatively to create one's own composition. (I might photograph a painting just to remember it or is composition for personal analysis.) There maybe a few paintings that might make great HDR photos though. I remember seeing Salvador Dali's Last Super, in the Smithsonian, for the first time live. I had seen prints and photos of it before but in person I was floored by the how much the prints and photos missed in the use of light in the painting. Even just a macro HDR of some stunning area on some paintings might be interesting. ???

Amazing sculptures. A very fine capture. I rarely lug the camera around when in museums anymore as well ... it tends to take away from the personal time to reflect upon the art when looking for a way to photograph it. Most would be more inclined to take a photo of a sculpture (such as this) than a painting.
