Is there anything cooler than the old architecture throughout Europe? I say there is not.

In this upcoming article that I'm working on for Smashing Magazine, I mention a membrane between fantasy and reality, and, for whatever reason, seeing things like this help me drift back and forth between what is real and what is not real. I know critics typically get caught up in reality; I get caught up in fantasy. I can't be in places like this without thinking of the Game of Thrones.

The tags you have put for this photo are the same the designers wanted this building to communicate - the power and majesty of God. Its a testament to their design that it still communicates this message hundreds of years after its completion.

I normally don't like castles - mainly because all castles in Germany are thought to look like Neuschwanstein or other Bavarian castles which is certainly not the case - all ranting aside, this shot is perfect... the angle is awesome and the architecture... oh my! Great work, Trey!!!

Weird. I was holding A Game of Thrones in my hand as I read your description. I'm re-reading in anticipation of the next volume, which can't come soon enough. I know exactly what you mean about getting lost in fantasy; for me it is just sort of a feeling of being removed from a particular place and time. It has never been as strong as it was when I visited Scotland and saw the castle ruins where my ancestors had tread. It's a surreal feeling for sure, and I hope to be able to spend more time exploring places like this.

In conclusion: great shot!

this is actually a church called Notre Dame de Fourviere. It was built during the art nouveau period around the same time as the Sacre Coeur in Paris and though the Sacre Coeur is lovely on the outside, its interior pales in comparison to the interior of Fourviere. This is an amazing edifice. Lyon is a great city. If you haven't gone you must. They have a great tour of medieval courtyards and the chocolaterie Bernachon serves up a wicked 'success' (suke-say)
