The Unusual Pit On The Hill

... with the trees behind that I photographed earlier.

What on earth is this brick-lined pit? Because it is slightly shallower at the steps, and deeper at the opposite end, Kristi speculates that this was once a swimming pool. I have to admit, I cant think of anything else to explain it. Maybe you know what it once was?
