Thanks guys ... FYI here is one of the original shots. The HDR was from 3 shots at -2,0,+2. This is the over-exposed image ... on the two others you can only see the sky.

BTW, the reasons I think this HDR worked are: -

1) It was a cloudy day, with the sun shining through the clouds.
2) The shot was taken at a very wide angle (10mm).
3) The saturation was kept low (i.e. so the end result is more believable).

Comments welcome...

that is an amazing photo. It looks just like the beginning of a really creepy movie. Well done! I also like a lot of your photos of Tokyo, really captures the oversaturated feel of the place.

@ ajikan81 - thanks very much. Most of my HDR's I do quite over saturated, but this one I thought could do with a low saturation treatment.

I love these pictures, is there any way I can have these as my background? When I save the image, it doesn't seem to work.

@Nokillmonkeys - not sure why it won't work as a background for you ... I just downloaded the original size and set this to the background on my laptop and it worked for me (I right clicked and chose "preview" then right clicked the image in "windows picture and fax viewer" and chose "set as desktop background")

So I had the honor of my photo being posted right under this one in the Pink Tentacle entry and just wanted to say that your stuff is great!

Also I envy that you can do good HDR stuff handheld. Are you going off 3 exposures?

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

@dokool - I shoot almost all of my HDRs handheld and using 3 exposures (-2,0,+2). The main reasons for this are I am too lazy to bother with the tripod (unless it is dark) ... and the D80 can only bracket for 3 shots. With the AEB and multi-shot I can take 3 shots in around 1 second and photomatix does a pretty good job of aligning the images.

Yeah, I do the same exposure bracket as you (on a D50), but I'm always mortally afraid of keeping my hands steady enough.

However your prolificness and the quality of your stuff is inspiring me to give handheld HDR a short more often, because I regret that I've only really done half a dozen HDR shots so far as I thought I'd have to be tethered to my tripod. So I'll have to give it a shot more often ;-)

@dokool - thanks for your kind comments.

The only tips I have for shooting HDRs handheld are: -

1) ensure the image preview is turned off (so you can take the shots faster)
2) have the camera set to multi shot
3) squeeze the shutter release and hold it down for the full 3 shots
4) time the squeeze of the shutter release with your breathing (kind of like shooting a rifle)
5) if possible lean on something to help keep steady

Good luck ...

Very cool shot. It's amazing how so many of the HDR images have an "illustrated" quality to them. I'm very interested in trying out some HDR. Did you use auto-bracketing for the shot? Also, I noticed you mentioned photomatix. Have you ever used Photoshop for aligning the images?

@badwooddigital - yes, I always use auto-bracketing ... and no, I haven't (yet) tried using photoshop for HDR ... so far have always used photomatix.
