My Dad is 100 Years Old

fun at the guy maddin retrospective.

i'm an enormous fan of the work of guy maddin, canadian filmmaker and psychologically masochistic genius.

so i was enormously overjoyed when metro cinema held a retrospective of maddin's work the week before last.

so overjoyed, in fact, that i went to every screening. most of the films i had seen before on DVD, but maddin's films really demand a theatrical treatment more than most.

here's isabella Rossellini in "My Dad is 100 Years Old", which is very good but not as good as "The Heart of the World", another short.

my favourite guy maddin film is "The Saddest Music in the World", which is absolutely hilarious and tragic. i cannot recommend the film strenuously enough.

Aw man, that would be a great night. I'm so jealous. I watched some Guy Maddin stuff in a Canadian Cinema class a few years ago now and saw Saddest Music when it came to the Bytown Cinema in Ottawa. I agree - seeing it in a theatre does so much more justice to his work.

    Nice pic, by the way!

The Saddest Music in the World was very impressive: yes, both tragic and funny.

Photos inside a theatre are some of my most favorite images.

    Is this seat taken?

Have you had a chance to see "Brand Upon the Brain" yet? Sonya probably mentioned that we were there a couple weeks ago. It was my first feature-length Maddin, but I was mesmerized. The amount of care that went into every visual of that film is astounding. Completely OCD editing.

'Have you had a chance to see "Brand Upon the Brain" yet?'

yes, at the end of the retrospective.

i found it somewhat disappointing, although that was due only to the greatness of the preceding films.

Aw! Sweet little Metro Cinema! I miss it!
I used to be a ticket-selling girl there.

Cool work. Looks like a still from a movie about a movie. Very meta.
