The Elephant
The Giant Elephant weighing 40 tons and measuring 12 metres high, it
can carry up to 30 passengers for trips along the river and in the
Nantes city
In Nantes / Île de Nantes
“La galerie des machines”
Nowhere else in the world, such machines are being built. Share this daydream visiting the “Galerie des machines” (Machines Gallery) settled in the naves of Dubigeon’s former shipyards, industrial heritage of the city. They are both laboratory and exhibition, and there you can find and test elements of “Mondes marins” (marine world) (2009 construction) or witness the trial flight of “L’arbre aux hérons” (the Heron tree) (2011 construction). As from July 2007, a 12-meters-high elephant, weighing 40 tonnes, capable of trumpeting and throwing dust, will be able to carry 35 passengers on his back or inside his belly for an extraordinary journey on the “Île de Nantes” (Island of Nantes).
François Delarozière, inventor and constructor of settings and machines for more than 15 years, is the artistic manager of the organization “La Machine”. He designs and runs the making of big machines for shows, and in particular the most representative of the “Compagnie Royal de Luxe”.
Pierre Oréfice is the artistic Manager of Manaus organization which has been creating and producing shows or events in town spaces and more particularly on the docks of European harbours (Nantes, Saint-Nazaire, Anvers) since 1999. He is the co-author with François Delarozière of the project of Nantes Machines.

It's the The Sultan's Elephant. It looks like the Sultan isn't around, though. I always wondered what one does with a 40+ ton mechanical elephant when there are no performances. Now I know.
It's a good photo, too. I only wish I could see it in person.

In fact no , the Sultan's Elephant is a machine for the show created by the « Royal de Luxe » company and this one is almost the same with some automatisms more created by the « La Machine » compagny

I remember seeing this Elephant when they had the show in the streets of London. Very impressive!

I'm even more amazed that there are two elephants like this. That's over 80 tons of mechanical elephants! Still, you can understand my error.
