Birch Bowl #81

Birch Bowl #81

This is a piece of Alaskan Birch heart wood, taken from a tree harvested in the Matenuska Susitna Valley of South Central Alaska.

The wood was turned green, allowed to dry for several months in my shop, then sculpted and carved to resemble foaming white water. Salmon carved from birch burl were added along the rim to give the overall impression of a spawning salmon run. The piece was finished with Danish Oil and old fashioned boiled spar varnish.

This piece won 1st Premium at the 2008 Alaska State Fair.
