Gathered from Abney park, no less. With thick gloves.

Is this the best season to pick nettles for soup then? Or are they suitable any time of year? Must find a recipe and try this, it appeals to me.

Maybe something us townees need to rediscover. I'm amazed every year at how no-one ever seems to be gathering the fine crops of blackberries on the Lee (not by the pre-Olympic toxic zone lower down, I can understand that, but around the Hackney/Walthamstow Marshes, pretty safe if the giant hogweed doesn't get you).

But I mentioned this to a rural friend of mine, and she says no-one seems to go blackberrying where she lives these days, it is regarded as faintly disreputable. I guess you are supposed to buy them in Tesco with lots of packaging and a proper sell-by date.

Anyway, there is a fine sloe bush in Abney Park I am keeping an eye on...

This is definitely the best time to pick nettles. And there's some very promising elferflower sprouting in Abney Park too, which should be ripe for the picking in a couple of weeks.

Sloes in Abney Park? You should not have told me.

I know where the bushes on the marshes are too - and saw people picking them last year. Might have to get myself down there.
