Jailed beams of light

Jailed beams of light by Stillframe.
Had to look straight up to see the lights fade completely into the night. What a sight.
Even bigger, a photo just can't do it justice.

Really high-powered lights are situated in Battery Park City.

What i'm really wondering about is how the beams of light can be seen. Usually when you shine a light you can only see the ends unless there is some fog or dust, but I doubt they are shooting fog that high in the air.

Beautiful, I wonder how far away you can see these. Ex-Baltimore photographer, now New Yorker, has an impressive shot from up close.

Josh: I think it's based on the same principles as the Bat Signal. Just a hunch. Or magic. There's that too.
Nick: HOLYSHIT! That's simply incredible.

Pretty sure there's a bunch of particulates in the air (smog) that help reflect the light on it's way up... or magic.
