Felixstowe pier HDR

It's a day of firsts today! Earlier it was portraits, now it's long exposure seascapes! Converted to HDR too (another first!)

I did manage to obtain a fair amount of grain in these pics which I put down to using just one RAW file for the HDR - advice on if I'm correct would be most welcome :)

Great shot! What was your shutter speed? Filters?

thanks very much. ah yes it appears that my exif data has been lost somewhere along the line. Either in photomatix or when i batch re-sized in fireworks!

This was taken around dusk so no ND filters were needed, I just used my regular UV filter for protection against spray. I did set exposure compensation to -2 though.

This was a 5 second exposure on shutter priority which gave f22.

It really wasn't a great photo until I processed it with photomatix though - way too dark and I was struggling to make it look any good just using photoshop.

I thank you for the response; the information is very helpful.

I think your theory is right about the single frame HDR. It does tend to introduce a lot of noise in Photomatix.

Also, shooting at f22 tends to problematic as most lenses are at their sharpest between f5.6 and f16. (Generally best to pick the one closest whilst maintaining the depth of field you want but sometimes this inevitably means using an ND filter to get the shutter speed you need.)

The only other thing which could have contributed, but I suspect hasn't, would be a High ISO (but I'm assuming you had this set to 100 or 200 and not Auto).

Having said all of that this is astonishing considering its a first.

Exceptional! I'm dying to try a long water (beach, waterfall, whatever) shot. Excellent HDR and "soft water" shot.

Another good one along with all the rest .... .. .

It's amazing what you can do with post editing software. Photo blending long exposures with faster shutter speeds can sometimes offer dazzling results if you are into a lot of effects. It can be a challenge, of course. But that's what I find makes photography even more rewarding. I still find myself viewing anothers work and asking the question, "how did they do that"? Light and angle is everything.

Nonetherless, I still have a lot to learn. And generally speaking, I will just shoot and spend a minute or two tweaking my photos. But then that just all depends on what I want to achieve and the time I want to invest into a shot. After all, the end results can we very rewarding and sometimes cause you to say to yourself - "wow"! "Look at that " :-)
