Milky Way

Milky Way

First off, I have to credit and thank Mike H for letting me tag along with him to this great location as he finally got to shoot an image he's been visualising for months...

Cheers Mike :)

I've shot at Garie once before, but a couple of nights ago Mike and I walked up a hill/cliff that looks over the beach to shoot these two trees and (hopefully) the milky way in between them.

The weather was ideally clear and we had an almost-new moon behind us, but considering how soon after sunset we were shooting, our beautiful galaxy was still surprisingly bright in the sky.

This image is a blend of two separate shots I took around 2 hours apart. One at around 5:15pm at sunset and one around 7:00pm when the milky way was visible.

I processed them in photoshop independently and when done, loaded them into two separate layers in PS, then basically dragged a black/white gradient into the layer mask of the top layer so that the foreground from the lighter image blended in with the sky of the darker image.

It's something a little different to my usual and it looks a little bit surreal to me, but I guess realism goes out of the window a little when blending a night shot with a day shot.

Anyway, I hope you like :)

Cheers

Gibsons Steps

Gibsons Steps

I took this photo after sunset overlooking Gibsons Steps on the Great Ocean Road 18 months ago. I wasn't really happy with it at the time but decided to revisit it yesterday and put it through my current photoshop workflow. Now it's probably one of my favourites :) I may have to revisit some more oldies soon :)

Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain

Here's a rare scene from my recent trip to Tasmania - Cradle Mountain with blue sky behind it!

Sonia and I practically planned the remaining 5 days of our tassie trip around a half-day of good weather that was forecast at Cradle in the middle of the week... We spent a couple of days down in Hobart before driving up to Cradle on the Wednesday morning. As we arrived we were greeted with some very pleasing conditions for the afternoon... Then right on cue the complete grey-out steamrolled it's way in for the next 2 days, but we'd already captured a couple of photos in this very nice late afternoon light so I was happy...

The bad weather really just gave us a good excuse to relax and enjoy our cabin and other facilities (I think I must have set a record for number bacon and egg breakfasts in a row) at the Peppers lodge :)

Props to Tim Poulton for the tip on this cool spot on the edge of Dove Lake

The Hazards

The Hazards

Hey guys, here is my second shot from last weeks trip to Tasmania!

The mountain range in the background is "The Hazards" situated in Coles Bay on the east coast. The whole area is a wonderfully beautiful place and for a brief few minutes at the end of the day the storm parted enough for the sunset to light up the clouds in a stunning array of colour.

The day didn't start out so stormy, Sonia just uploaded a new image taken on the same day on our way to Coles Bay... Check it out here...
