Smelling the cork: If you've ever been to a fine restaurant that employs a sommelier, you know the ritual: he opens your "this-costs-the-same-as-our-car-payment" chosen wine, and offers you the cork. This is for you to smell...you're looking for musty aromas, spillage around the cork (meaning air leaked into the wine), or tiny crystals on the end of the cork. Good to know? You're right--let's just drink it from the box.
