Here's another chap we've visited before.. Roy the Hippo. flic.kr/p/5T2rUB. Originally cast out from the gang at Big Dam, we'd previously seen him at small pool near a windmill sharing with some Egyptian geese and a croc.
Now he's moved on.
He's got a great secluded des res near the fence line, again with a duck family but no croc!
He's obviously keen to show us who's boss as this display, which looks like a yawn, is actually a display of dominance. Us tourists got a bit close to the shoreline for his liking so he swam (actually, he walked - they can't swim...) over and stared at us just flicking his little ears impatiently at us..
We were at a stand off.
My Dad and I were both waiting with long lenses in hand. He was staring, only eyes appearing above water.
Yawn dammit.
He resisted.
We waited.
He flicked his ears some more.
We waited.
He yawned, spreading his massive mouth wide.
We hit him with all out burst mode.
We turned to leave.
He stared a bit more and then swam (walked) off, back to the far side of the pool.
He probably thinks his dominance display worked.... :-)

You wouldn't want to be the dentist cleaning those things would you! Great set Steve, looks like you had a wonderful time down there. We're hoping to take the kids on Safari in the next couple of years so looks like I need to invest in a really long lens or risk an arm :)
