Monkstone Beach, Dawn

Monkstone Beach, Dawn by Steve Castle.
This is dawn in mid August in the northern hemisphere. Yes, not January - high summer.

The intrepid team of Richard, John, Rob and me were the only ones brave/foolish/mad (delete as..) to get up before 5am during the WFC Flickr camping trip to go do dawn.

John swore blind that Richard and I ran straight back to bed after seeing the dark grey light turn to light grey light shortly after 6am.. But we didn't - we were working the other end of the beach so as not to get in each others shots (which is a total lie - we were on our way back to bed, got to the bottom of the steps, turned round and noticed the sky clear a bit...!)

This was gonna be black and white but I quite like the muted colours, so stuck with that instead!

Take that Duvet Huggers!!

Wot? No IR filter?

Just kidding. You've got a nice balance between blurring the spray and maintaining movement in the shot. Well done!

Looks fabulous Steve, I too like the lack of colour,
just that hint is nice....
Though not at all like mid summer, as you say, more like January......I'm glad the weather didn't spoil the WFC summer camp. It seems you all had a great time...

Anytime! - me, rugged?? :-D
We did have a good time - it just took a bit of effort at times! Trudging around in the mud was getting a bit dull..

Like JH said! Instant fave! Would also like this as a mono but you're right that the muted tones are very cool. This weather is something that's becoming annoyingly common this 'summer'!

This is superb Mr Castle, really nice, love the wave you've captured on the horizon, and the misty water crashing against the rocks is fabulous. I would suggest just a little bit of tweaking to bring out the clouds in the sky a little bit more though, but still very nicely done.

Oo-er missus, this is flippin' brilliant Mr. Castle. Ethereal, surreal, whatever it deserves mucho respect, and make that Respect with a capital R.

Its amazing what you can find if you look hard enough, that shot makes the morning look stormy, cold, dull and wet, when in reality it was worse than that!

Didn't know you spoke Puerto Rican JH?
Cheer Steff!
I deliberately lost the sky Carl, I just preferred the question mark shape of the water and the sky looked a bit too moody and false for the rest of the shot!
Ta Andy - I've been called surreal before but never ethereal!!
True.. but we'd do it all again I'm sure!

Corrr.. that's a beautiful sight. I can try to imagine the feeling of it, but wont get anywhere close. Leaving it in colour was definitely the right decision; the rocks are far more interesting and the temperature sense it gives is fantastic. Incredible =)
