Excellent macro. There are quite a few of these beauties at Rye Meads at the moment if you need to photo one for your collection of Hertfordshire wild flower pictures.

Thanks everyone. They are pretty, aren't they?

Roger - I would have gone on a Herts orchid hunt today but the weather didn't cooperate. Next Wednesday maybe. Thanks for the tip. Where exactly are they?

Steve - they are on the right hand side of the path north of the Kingfisher Hide among the hazels just before you get to the turnstile. Incidentally the Herts & Middx WLT has opened a walk the other side of the A414 from Rye Meads which is supposed to be an orchid walk, but whether there are any there I don't know.

Thanks, Roger, I know exactly where you mean. The new orchid walk sounds interesting. Three species of orchid can be found in a small area of the Lee Valley near Cheshunt but they are in a semi-shade and are difficult to photograph.

Do you know of any other Hertfordshire sites that are rich in wild flowers?

I always imagine triffids to be slightly larger, Tel ;-) but I know what you mean. It looks more animal than vegetable, doesn't it?

A version of this photograph has been used in a 2009 calendar which has been produced to raise money for a charity.
