April 2nd 2008 - Surround Yourself With Something Good

April 2nd 2008 - Surround Yourself With Something Good by Stephen Poff.
So today was not bad... Got a few things off of my chest concerning a few stressful issues... I'll not get specific, but I feel a little better now.

This afternoon was spent with my friend Nick whom I work with. He's just getting into photography and he went nuts this afternoon while I showed him this light writing technique. He was so stoked he said he might skip the gym to go play with it at the house more. I hope he gets into the 365 thing. I think he'd find it lots of fun and educational.

So while I was thinking about how to participate in the podcast mini-challenge of borders and frames, I decided to get my lovely bride in on this one and frame myself twice.

I did this one with a small aperture to show Jessi that i do have a lot of "Charactar" (dust and hairs) on my TTV lens, but I'm not so sure it was the best for this photo.. hmm... I like it regardless though. How could I not? ;-)

This is adorable! I just taught my best friend light writing on St. Patrick's Day and she went nuts too!

I hope you feel better, Stephen. Keep the stress down. Take deep breaths and have a cup of tea. :)

Considering your level of transparency and your exposure time (15s), i think you did the writing in 6 - 7 seconds.
You're fast !

Awww... it's great! I'm impressed that Tam could keep her eyes still that long- we always look like freaky ghost eyes. :-)

Wow, you got Picasso+Strobist+viewfinder+365 all in one shot! That's a great picasso shot though, you nailed the light with a background behind it and all.
I need to play with photography more, looking at your stuff makes me get real tired of looking at mine. I just loaded 3 GB of photos into my computer, all of politicians shaking hands. I got up early today and wore a tie for that also, bleeack!
By the way, do you ever shoot with a Holga? Looking at your TTV shots it seems like that would be a more natural way to go about it. It's much more simple, no exposure to be concerned with and the lenses render things wonderfully. I have a couple of them, as well as a couple Dianas if you ever want to get them out. A good scan off a 2 1/4 neg will yield you some real nice print-image quality as well.

Thanks... and don't worry, I'm okay!

Yay! Thanks so much!

How nice of you to say that.... especially since I feel your hubby is always topping me somehow :-)

Yay! Thanks!

Yeah, I had to be pretty quick at this. Plus Tam was standing out of frame until the last second. So I had to finish it in time for her to get in position.

Thanks... aren't we so cute?

Thank you very much!

I do try ;-)

The trick is that she wasn't there the whole time. She was standing out of frame and the room was dark. In the last few seconds, she stepped in and I flashed us with the strobe.

Thanks! We definitely need to get together sometime. Flickermail me your phone number sometime. As far as the Holga, I've thought about it. But I'm not really all that great with film... and there's not the instant gratification of digital. I like to know that I can shoot 60 shots if I need to to get what I want. I know I couldn't do that with film. But who knows.. might try it sometime.

Thanks Stu!

LOL.. oooo... where do I get to use these points?

Yay!

Coming from you... That's awesome ;-)

Told ya! I just hardly ever shoot it with that much DOF. And thanks. I'm so lucky!

I'm so glad... I thought I was gonna get all the comments Jessi gets like "I don't like the added texture". But I think the message sells it here :-)

Thanks!

Yeah, those comments are annoying as fuck. So far I haven't gotten any on the photos where I actually HAVE added texture. Hah!

Very nice. Did you have to write LOVE backwards since you were shooting TTV? If so, I'm impressed. If not, I'm still impressed.

Thanks, and ironically... no. TTV is already reversed, so I just wrote normally and it turned out written the correct way... BUT... if you look at any of my other light writing photos... I always write them backwards... so I can do it :-)

This is precisely why many of us shot better before we had digital. I used to could go somewhere with E6 slide film, where you had to nail the exposure and I got great stuff. Now that I can chimp and reshoot I don't always strive for it the same. But a Holga is point and click, no exposure control. It leaves you with just composition and content to think of, and since most people print full-frame there is no post-cropping either. A good scan of a 2 1/4 negative can produce great results as well.
I'll send you my number, or you can email me at dcphotography@gmail.com, I do want to get some local workshops going one day.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but I'm so much more fluid than that. I also exaggerate by saying that I take 60 shots to get the one... but still. I know that my OCD added to my drive to get exactly what's in my head on to the photo would not allow for me to just take the shot and hope it came back alright. I think that had I been into film heavy before the digital revolution, I would have been shooting with a poloroid back.

Either way, although a holga wouldn't have worked for this kind of shot... I think that I probably would enjoy the charm of it. I might have to pick one up.
