"Fire in the Hole"

Aperture Academy

I returned to Pfieffer Beach, in Big Sur California, this weekend. I visited the weekend before but conditions were not optimal...a big fog bank was keeping the good light muted and the surf was a bit too rough.

Tonight's conditions were optimal -- the best I've ever seen and I've been to this spot many, many times. The tide was on it's way out so the forefront rocks were glossy (and slick!) and there was no fog so the light was warm.

So as I reached the "window" I found the light from the setting sun was creating a very cool beam from the sea mist that would float up after a surge of water came crashing through the portal.

In this shot, taken near the end of the good light, the beam of light beam isn't as visible as it had been a few minutes prior, however I really liked how the sunlight eluminates the crashing wave, lending some motion to the scene, and more color.

Wow, amazing photo! When I visited Big Sur it was too foggy to see anything.
