Guerilla Gardening in Dunbar-Spring |
Sunday, March 30, community members and
other concerned people built the
Ramona-Magon Autonomous Community Garden
on 9th Ave at 6th Street in Tucson.
This action was taken in part to protest
and prevent the construction of a new
high-traffic road through downtown,
slated to destroy and displace several
neighborhood buildings and
organizations. The road project, known
as Downtown Links, is a subject of much
controversy amongst all the
neighborhoods affected, including this
one, Dunbar-Spring.
A month or so later the city fenced off
the whole site, claiming there were
toxins in the dirt at the site. shortly
thereafter, the city council made a
final vote on the road alignment that
will smash through the site and cut off
the neighborhood from downtown forever.
(see downtownlinks.info for official city information about the
project
or rethinkthelink.com for a community opposition site.
