World Cup Dreams

Pete completed the portrait of David Beckham in time for the start of the 2006 World Cup. It seemed appropriate to make the image for the World Cup in Germany in the England 'away' strip. He used symbols of Beckham's Number 7, the England Badge and the World Cup trophy as main elements in the composition. However all these became of secondary importance against the strong dramatic portrait of the former England Captain. Almost gritting his teeth with concentrated determination, Beckham looked out of the picture and beyond the audience into a then unknown future. There was hope and promise in his features and the stamp of Bobby Moore holding up the 1966 World Cup was placed as a shine in his eye symbolising the hope of the English footballing public which we now know was unfulfilled.

213cm x 274cm ( 84" x 108" ) on paper. Created from 16,000 used postage stamps.
