December 3 2007 day 53 - When stress does a number... by DeathByBokeh.
Stress plays a big role in spiking blood sugars. These days, with stress bombarding us at work, at home, and on the road, it is imperative to manage stress and not let it affect blood sugars. Since my diagnosis, I've learnt to manage stress. I take a deep breath, count to 10, and diffuse the cause of the stress. As diabetics, we can sometimes control what we eat, and treat blood sugar highs with insulin. But stress is a whole different story. The body responds to stress with a counter regulatory reaction. Adrenaline and cortisol can play havoc with a diabetic's blood sugars. Being a diabetic, it is best to learn to manage certain types of stress.

There is no cure for diabetes, yet.

Oh yeah, tell me about stress. My first visit to the ophthalmologist left me so anxious, I ended up in tears...and with a blood sugar of 7, which is very unusual for me. Cool effect! What did u do with Photoshop to achieve it?

Stress is such a disaster for diabetics! When I lived in NY and had a stressful job, I'd be 110 when I woke, 80 after a walk to work, and 200 1 hour into work. Every day. And the insulin resistance at work was CRAZY.

This is really a cool shot, Sri.

A bad morning at work can spike my bloodsugars horribly. I have alerts in my Outlook calendar to remind me at 9, 10:30, 12, 3, and 5 to check. The intensity of my job means that I can't afford to be unproductive and when I'm high or low I can't think at a high level. Good blood sugar control is vital for my health, but also my career.

I'd offer to take you out and get a coffee, but you're probably running around trying to get ready for your trip. If I'm wrong though, give me a heads up and I'll meet you someplace.
