Thank you SuzReezy! Yeah, all these elite marathoners are lean and strong, but Ryan's leg muscles were definitely among the more well defined. A lot of "wow" and "he's a hottie" type comments from the women marathoners standing just behind me (like many, they were planning to run the NYC Marathon the following day). =D

Terrific shot. Great detail. As all have said, those muscles really show years of athletic training.

Are you sure they were talking about Ryan? ;-)

Yes indeed, countless hours and untold dedication have shaped his gift into a trip to the Olympics. Thank you.

Ha, yeah that guy was part of the cheering section from Brooks, but I guess they weren't above encouraging runners sponsored by other companies as well. Yeah, Ryan never looked uncomfortable out there. The only other guy I can say that about is Ritzenhein, who took second. All of the other frontrunners looked to be in some degree of physical pain, particularly as the race wore on. That was the beauty of the 5-lap course. I got to see them run by a number of times and based on their facial expressions and whether they were moving up or falling back, it was pretty easy to predict what I'd be seeing on the next lap. Although Brian Sell, who took 3rd, surprised me. He moved up a couple of places in that last 5-mile lap, I believe.

Yeah, I know, right? He just looked fast.

Yes, Ryan Shay passed away at about mile 5. He ran by me once, but I didn't get a photo of him for whatever reason. The eeriest photo I saw from the day was a photo of him standing next to Ryan Hall (pictured here) at the starting line, talking (they are former training partners). What a mix of fates awaited them. Life is short.

Haha! =p Yes, believe me. First of all it was 7:30 am and I had been out until 4-something the night before. Next, I was wearing this ginormous Crumpler backpack that's about as big as I am to hold me gear. And since it was cold, I was wearing several layers and a beanie hat. So even if they were looking, which I'm pretty sure they weren't, the likelihood of them looking at me and thinking "hot" ... verrrrrrry low at best.

Ryan Hall is perhaps the greatest American distance runner to have ever lived. It is a tragedy that his is not a household name. I saw him race that day and it was a thing to behold. He threw in an amazing surge at mile 17 I believe (like a 4:32 mile) and left the field behind. In that field was a former marathon world record holder (Khalid) and an Olympic silver medalist (Meb). Goosebumps.

I'd absolutely LOVE if you would add your photo to our flickr group and allow us feature it on Complete Running!

Of course, we'd give you proper attribution. Pretty please?

Thanks for considering. :)

that he is

yep, and he makes the most of it

it was amazing to watch. I saw him every 5 miles or so, standing at about 250m in from what would be the finish line, so I guess I didn't see the surge at 17 but I saw the before and after. It was an insanely great performance and the man deserves to be an Olympian.

Sure thing, Mark, go right ahead. Thanks. =)
