SUMIT MITRA

SUMIT MITRA

I met him at Octavius, a sound studio in Bandra. I was there recording music for a TVC. When I entered the studio, I saw him sitting in a corner, holding a grand accordion, which had his name written on it in big and bold letters, almost like an identity card. SUMIT MITRA, they said. There was a story behind everything he had on him. His ‘flower power’ shirt was stitched in the 60s style. The studio interiors and wall matched this look, as if they changed themselves, like a chemeleon, after being inspired from him.
In between the recording, he told me his old stories: working with renowned Bollywood music directors and songs and films. He spoke in a typical oldies style, with a lot added flavors and masala. Then he showed me an old black & white photo of him with Rajkumar. These old photographs he had kept carefully in his wallet. He was really happy and thanked me a thousand times when I sent my snaps of him later. I hope he keeps them too for a long time.
